Today’s
post will cover all areas regarding our Dictionary.
First let’s start off where
to find this feature. On our website, go to the home page and select the tab,
Dictionary.
Once that tab is selected you
will see a search page with “ASL Dictionary” on the cover with a search bar. Once you have decided on what word you would
like to search, go ahead and type it into the search bar, then click the search
icon.
Once you have clicked on the search icon, all
word variations and synonyms will pop up as potential options. For our example,
we selected the word “Hearing” and typed that into the search bar. From our
selected word, multiple variations and synonyms appeared, including: Court
Case, Hear (Twice), Hearing (Three Times), Hearing Aids, Hearing Dogs, Hearing
Loss, Trial, and Tribunal. Words that appear more than once are the amount of
ways that the word can be signed differently.
Once you have selected the option you are looking for, go ahead and click on it. For our example, we have selected the first option of the word “Hear.” Also, keep in mind for the “Add to Favorites” icon in the upper right-hand corner, If you would like to move this selected word into a special folder, just click on the plus sign and all favorite words will accumulate to one folder for personal use on your dashboard.
Above, you will see the options at the bottom,
upper left, and upper right of the box that provide more specific details.
The video allows you to select a slower pace of the video to fully see the
handshape, hand location on person demonstrating, hand movement, and facial
expression of the person demonstrating the vocabulary word.
Bottom of the box:
Term: Hear
Synonyms: Listen
Variations:
Upper left of the box:
Add to My Vocabulary: Similar to the “Add to
Favorites” icon, If you would like to move this selected word into a personal
vocabulary folder, just click on the “Add to My Vocabulary” link and all
vocabulary words will accumulate to one folder for personal use on your
dashboard.
Upper right of the box:

If the word you are trying to search
does not appear, you can submit a “Dictionary Request.” You can use the form to
request that we add it to our dictionary. Fill in our “Word to Add” box and
write a sentence or definition of the word to give us context, so we can
properly sign your word in the sentence box given. Once you request a word that
we don’t have, your requested word will show up on your dashboard as
“requested”. Once we videotape
your word, it will show up on your Dashboard as “completed”.
